I don’t like the sentiment of “You’re privileged thus you don’t know true suffering” that seems to come with social justice.
Everyone is subject to pain, thus everyone has the right to be helped. You don’t forget to tend to the kid with the sprained wrist because someone broke their leg. You don’t tell the kid that their pain doesn’t matter because someone else is feeling it worse. Maybe for practicality’s sake you do help the kid with the broken leg first, but you don’t tell the kid with the sprained wrist that his pain doesn’t matter - he’s too white to know pain, he’s too rich to know pain, he’s too straight to understand.
Every single person has the capacity to feel pain. Pain is real for every person, regardless of where they sit in the social hierarchy. It just surprises me that a community that seems so adamant about classifying disorders and depression and monitoring suicides is so willing to take it upon themselves to judge who is deserving of being treated like they’re important.
No one is unimportant in the grand scheme of things, and maybe if you practised compassion as strongly as you practised your word policing we could build a strong, supportive society as such. I understand that we must be there to support the under-privileged, to offer a helping hand to those that society have disregarded - but that does not also mean turning your back on those that have been offered the best of life.
Pain does not discriminate. We should be willing to help anyone that becomes a victim of it.
